Should You Do a Camel Ride at the Pyramids?

A camel ride at the Pyramids is exactly what you'd imagine: swaying on a tall camel while the Great Pyramid and Sphinx loom in the background against an endless sand sea. Expect 30-90 minutes of riding plus photo stops. It's touristy and the handlers can be pushy for tips, but the experience of crossing dunes with one of the world's most iconic sights in view is genuinely memorable. The camels are usually calm if a bit grumpy. You'll dismount a few times for photos; the sand gets everywhere and the sun is brutal.

Best time is October to April when temperatures are bearable (avoid summer entirely). Expect to pay around $35-80 per person depending on duration, group size, and whether pickup from your Cairo hotel is included. Shorter rides near the Pyramids are cheaper; longer ones heading deeper into the desert cost more.

Pick a ride that starts at sunrise or sunset for better light and fewer crowds. Skip the add-on quad bike or horse combos if you're short on time or money; they're often rushed. Negotiate hard before you mount or book through a reputable tour operator rather than the guys who approach you at the entrance. Bring water, wear closed shoes, and don't feel bad about saying no to endless photo upsells.
