Khan el Khalili Bazaar: Worth Visiting?

Khan el Khalili is a sprawling, chaotic 14th-century bazaar in Islamic Cairo packed with shops selling spices, gold, perfumes, copperware, textiles, and tourist souvenirs. Expect narrow alleys, constant vendor calls, smells of incense and street food, and a mix of locals shopping alongside tour groups. It's atmospheric and fun for people-watching but can feel overwhelming, noisy, and very pushy. The experience is more about wandering and bargaining than finding unique treasures. Many items are mass-produced elsewhere.

Visit October to April when it's cooler; mornings are less crowded than afternoons or evenings. In summer it gets brutally hot inside the covered sections. Expect to pay around $5-15 for small souvenirs like spices or scarves, $20-80 for decent metalwork or jewelry after bargaining hard (often starting at double or triple the final price). A simple tea or coffee break in a local cafe costs $2-5. Guided tours add $15-90 depending on group size and inclusions.

Pick up good-quality spices, loose tea, or copper trays if you bargain well. Skip the "authentic" papyrus and alabaster—they're almost always fake tourist versions made in factories. Tip: decide your max price in advance, smile, say no firmly several times, and walk away if needed. It's a classic Cairo experience but two hours is usually enough.
