Johannesburg City Sightseeing: What to Know

Expect a standard double-decker hop-on hop-off bus that loops through the city centre, Constitution Hill, Mandela House in Soweto, and a few northern suburbs like Sandton and Melrose Arch. The open top is great for photos when the weather cooperates, but traffic can be heavy and some stretches are slow. The Soweto extension is the part most visitors find genuinely interesting; the pure city-centre loop feels more like a quick orientation than a deep experience. Tours run daily with recorded commentary that’s informative but not riveting.

Best time is the dry winter months (May to August) when days are sunny and clear. Summer (Nov–Feb) brings afternoon thunderstorms that can turn the open bus into a wet misery. Expect to pay around $25–40 for a one-day city ticket and $45–70 if you add the Soweto leg. Multi-day tickets don’t usually save much unless you plan to spread it over several days.

Honest tip: buy the combo ticket that includes Soweto and get off at the Mandela House and Regina Mundi Church. Skip the full city-only loop if your time is short – rather spend an extra hour in Soweto or walk around Newtown instead. Sit on the right-hand side going towards Soweto for better views and bring water and sunblock even in winter.
