Is the Nice City Train Tour Worth It?

The Nice city train is a small electric vehicle that follows a fixed route through the old town, along the Promenade des Anglais, and up to the Colline du Château for panoramic views. Expect a gentle, 50-minute ride with recorded commentary in multiple languages. It includes one 10-minute photo stop at the top. It's not a hop-on hop-off service; you stay on for the full loop. The experience is relaxed and family-friendly but can feel touristy, especially when the streets are crowded. Views of the sea and rooftops are genuinely good on clear days, though the narration is fairly basic.

Best time is spring or autumn when temperatures are comfortable and crowds are lighter. Summer works but the train gets hot and the old town is packed. Winter is surprisingly pleasant if you don't mind shorter daylight. Expect to pay around €10-15 per adult for a standard ticket; kids are roughly half price. Longer mountain train excursions into the Alps or hinterland cost significantly more, from €80 upward depending on inclusions.

Tip: choose the standard city circuit and skip the longer mountain options unless you specifically want a half-day trip out of town; the city route gives you the best overview for minimal effort. Sit on the right side when heading uphill for better sea views. Buy tickets at the departure point near the Promenade rather than online to avoid unnecessary fees.
