The walk along Dubrovnik's city walls is one of the best things you can do in the city. Expect a steep, mostly unshaded loop of about 2km that takes 45-90 minutes depending on how often you stop for photos. You'll get constantly changing views over the old town's rooftops, the sea, and the surrounding hills. It's physically tiring in the heat – lots of steps and narrow sections where you can't overtake slow walkers. The experience feels genuinely medieval in places, but it gets crowded quickly.
Best time is spring or autumn. In summer the walls turn into a slow-moving oven; go as early as they open (usually around 8am) or in the last hour before closing if you visit in peak season. Expect to pay around €35-45 for a standard entrance ticket. Guided tours add another €15-25 on top and are only worth it if you want historical context; the views don't need explaining.
Tip: Buy tickets online in advance during summer to skip the worst queues. Skip the guided tour if you're short on time or money – the self-guided walk is straightforward and the views are the real reason to go. Bring water and wear proper shoes; sandals are a bad idea on the uneven stone.
