Expect clear but often busy water with decent fish life, sea urchins, and occasional small octopuses. Most trips take you just outside the old town or to the nearby Elafiti islands. The boat rides are short, the snorkel stops last 30-45 minutes each, and groups are usually 8-20 people. Visibility is typically 10-20 meters in good conditions. It’s a pleasant half-day on the water rather than a world-class snorkeling adventure, so set expectations accordingly. The experience is relaxing if the sea is calm, choppy and less fun if the wind picks up.
Best time is late May through early October. June and September give you the sweet spot: warm water (22-25°C), fewer crowds than July and August, and lower prices. Peak summer is hotter, busier, and more expensive. Water temperature drops noticeably after mid-October. Expect to pay around $35-55 for a basic half-day snorkel trip from the harbor; $70-100 if it includes caves, multiple islands, or lunch.
Pick a small-group boat tour that visits one or two quiet spots rather than the packed “three-island” trips in high season. Skip anything advertised as “private” unless you’re splitting the cost with friends; the standard shared boats are perfectly fine. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one that fits well; rental gear is usually average quality.
