Most cooking classes in Puerto Vallarta last 3–5 hours and follow the same basic format: a quick market visit (or ingredients already prepped), hands-on prep of three or four classic Mexican dishes, plenty of tasting, and usually generous margaritas. Expect a small group of 6–12 people, a mix of tourists, and instructors who speak good English. You’ll learn knife skills for salsas, how to properly char tortillas, mole basics, and maybe ceviche or tamales depending on the class. It’s genuinely fun if you like to cook, and you go home with recipe cards and a mild buzz.
Best time is November through April when the weather is pleasant for both market walks and standing near a stove. Summer and early fall are hotter and more humid, though classes still run. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person; shorter chocolate or taco workshops sit at the low end, while longer experiences with better views, wine pairings, or smaller groups push toward the higher end.
Tip: Choose a class that actually includes a market tour if you want the full experience; skip the ones that are mostly “unlimited margaritas” if you care about actually learning. Book mid-week if possible—weekends get crowded with cruise passengers.
