ATV Tours in Puerto Vallarta: Worth It?

Expect a bumpy, dusty ride through the Sierra Madre foothills on dirt tracks, crossing shallow rivers and climbing hills with decent views of jungle and mountains. Tours usually last 2–4 hours including a stop at a waterfall or river for swimming, plus a basic tequila tasting or lunch at a roadside spot. It's fun if you like off-roading but gets repetitive after an hour; the scenery is nice but not mind-blowing. Groups can feel rushed, and the ATVs are often well-used. Best time is December through April when it's dry—trails stay passable and you won't be caked in mud or sweating through humidity. June to October brings heavy rains that can cancel trips or turn trails into slippery messes.

Expect to pay around $75–$150 per person depending on whether you ride solo, double up, or choose a RZR side-by-side. Private tours sit at the higher end. Tip: pick a morning departure to avoid the afternoon heat and bigger crowds. Skip the cheapest big-group tours if you want any control over the pace—go for smaller ones that let you actually enjoy the ride instead of following a guide in a conga line. Wear closed shoes, bring a bandana for dust, and don't expect luxury.
