Marietas Islands Tour from Puerto Vallarta

The Marietas Islands tour is a half-day boat trip (usually 4–6 hours) that takes you 20–25 miles offshore from Puerto Vallarta to a small protected archipelago known for clear water, seabirds, and the famous Hidden Beach. Expect snorkeling in decent but not world-class reefs, possible dolphin or whale sightings in season, a brief guided hike or swim-through to the Hidden Beach (weather permitting), and plenty of time to swim or lounge on the boat. The ride can be bumpy, especially on the way back; the islands themselves have no facilities so everything happens from the boat.

Best time is November through April when seas are calmer and visibility is better. Summer and early fall often bring rougher water that can cancel trips or make the Hidden Beach swim unsafe. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person depending on whether you choose a small-group tour with snorkel gear and lunch included or a larger party boat. Private charters run $700 and up.

Pick a smaller boat (12–25 people) if you want decent snorkeling time and fewer crowds at the beach; larger catamarans are cheaper but feel more like cattle boats. Skip the Hidden Beach portion if the swell is over 3–4 feet—it's not worth the risk or the long wait in the water. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone case, and motion-sickness remedies if you're even slightly prone.
