Horseback Riding in Puerto Vallarta: What to Know

Expect a mix of beach, jungle trails, and river crossings with decent horses that range from steady trail veterans to occasionally spirited ones. Most rides last 1.5–3 hours and take you into the foothills behind town where you get views over the bay. The horses are generally well cared for at the better places, but quality drops at some of the larger operations that churn through tourists. Morning rides are cooler and calmer; afternoon ones can be hot and buggy in the summer.

Best time is December through April when temperatures are pleasant and rain is rare. Summer and early fall bring heat, humidity, and afternoon storms that can make trails slippery. Expect to pay around $60–$110 per person depending on ride length and group size. Shorter beach-only rides sit at the low end; longer mountain or sunset trips push toward the higher end. Tips are appreciated but not always required.

Pick a smaller ranch experience over the big beachfront tourist operations — the horses are usually in better shape and the guides pay more attention. Skip the cheapest sunset “romantic” rides if you actually want to canter or see anything beyond a crowded beach at golden hour. Wear closed shoes with a heel, bring a hat and sunscreen, and don’t be afraid to speak up if your horse doesn’t feel right.
