Expect a busy but genuinely fun half-day trip. The water is warm and clear enough to see decent coral and loads of tropical fish even from the surface. The main beach gets crowded with day-trippers, but once you're 30-50 meters offshore the snorkeling is noticeably better. You'll spend about 1.5-2 hours in the water across two or three spots; the rest is travel and beach time. It's a solid choice if you only have a day or two in Phuket and don't want to commit to a full-day Phi Phi or Similan trip.
Best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmest and visibility is usually 8-15 meters. May-October is cheaper but rougher; many days the boat trips get canceled or the water is murky from runoff. Expect to pay around $35-65 per person for a half-day speedboat tour including hotel pickup, gear, lunch, and guide. Private or smaller-group options sit at the higher end.
Tip: choose a speedboat tour that visits two snorkel sites instead of the big slow boat that dumps 100+ people at once. Skip the add-on 'sea-walking' helmet walk — it's overpriced, stressful, and damages the reef. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; rental gear is often well-used.
