Cozumel Snorkeling from Cancun: Worth It?

Snorkeling Cozumel from Cancun means a full-day trip: 45-minute ferry ride each way, then boat rides to the reefs. The water is usually crystal clear with excellent visibility, and the reefs are lively with colorful fish, rays, and occasional turtles. Expect a guided group experience with 30-60 minutes actually in the water per stop. It's not a deserted paradise—boats can get crowded and the schedule feels a bit rushed—but the marine life is genuinely better than most spots directly off Cancun.

Best time is May through September when seas are calmer and visibility is typically 50-100 feet. December to March has bigger swells that can stir up sand and make the ferry ride rough. Expect to pay around $90–$160 per person including ferry, snorkel gear, lunch, and guide. Cheaper options mean larger groups and less time in the water; higher ones usually give you smaller boats and better reef sites.

Tip: Choose a catamaran or smaller speedboat tour that visits at least two reefs (Palancar and one other) and skip the ones that tack on “shopping time” in San Miguel. Bring your own snorkel mask if you have a good fit—rental gear is often well-used. If you get seasick easily, take something before the ferry.
