The Cu Chi Tunnels are a network of underground passages used by Vietnamese fighters during the Vietnam War. Expect a half-day trip from Ho Chi Minh City with a guide explaining the history, followed by walking the site, seeing trap doors and booby traps, and crawling through a short widened section of tunnel (about 20-30 meters). It's hot, humid, and can feel claustrophobic even in the modified parts. The experience is more educational than adventurous these days, with some touristy elements like firing ranges where you can pay extra to shoot old weapons. It's worthwhile if you're interested in wartime history; otherwise it can feel like a long, sweaty history lesson.
Best time to go is the dry season from December to April when the ground is firmer and less muddy. Expect to pay around $15-40 per person depending on whether you join a small group tour with pickup, go private, or hire a driver. Independent travel by Grab and taxi is possible but less convenient as the site is 1.5 hours away.
Tip: Choose a morning tour to avoid the worst heat and crowds. Skip the shooting range unless you're genuinely interested - the extra cost adds up quickly and feels tacky. Wear closed shoes, bring water, and don't force yourself into the tunnel crawl if you're even slightly claustrophobic; watching others is fine.
