Expect a long but rewarding day. The trip usually starts with a 45-minute drive from San Juan to Fajardo, followed by a fast 50-55 minute catamaran ride to Culebra. Once there you’ll spend a few hours snorkeling in clear water, visiting beaches like Flamenco, and having lunch on the boat or shore. It’s a full-day commitment (10–11 hours total) with plenty of time on the water and a decent amount of beach time. The boat rides can be bumpy if the swell is up, so take motion sickness meds if you’re sensitive.
Best time to go is April–July when seas are calmer and crowds thinner than peak winter season. Expect to pay around $150–$220 per person for the standard tour including snorkel gear, lunch, and drinks. Private charters run $900–$1,800 for up to six or eight people depending on the boat.
Pick the smaller-group tours if you can; they feel less like cattle calls and give you more space on the beach stops. Skip the cheapest options that pack 40+ people—they rush the snorkeling and the experience suffers. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone case, and cash for any extras.
