Deep Sea Fishing in Panama City: What to Know

Expect a full day on the Gulf chasing kingfish, grouper, snapper, and maybe mahi or sailfish depending on the season. Trips usually run 8-12 hours, leaving early from the marina. The boat ride out takes 30-90 minutes; once there you’ll spend most of the day trolling or bottom fishing. It’s genuinely fun if you like being on the water and don’t get seasick, but it can be tiring, especially in summer heat or rougher winter seas. You keep some of the catch—most captains will clean and bag it for you to take back to your rental or a local restaurant.

Best time is late spring through early fall (May–September) when the water is warmer and the fish are more active. Summer offers the best shot at variety, though thunderstorms can pop up. Shoulder months like April and October are calmer and cheaper. Expect to pay around $800–$1,600 for a half-day private charter for up to six people; full-day trips run $1,200–$2,200. Per-person “open boat” shared trips are sometimes available in the $150–$250 range but less common here.

Tip: book a private charter if your group is four or more—it’s usually better value and more flexible. Skip the cheapest bottom-fishing “cattle boats” if you want actual deep-sea experience. Bring motion sickness meds even if you think you don’t need them; the Gulf can get choppy fast.
