Devonport Ferry from Auckland: Worth It?

The Devonport ferry is a quick 10-12 minute ride across the harbour that gets you from downtown Auckland to a relaxed village with good cafés, waterfront walks, and views back to the city skyline. Expect a simple commuter boat rather than a tourist cruise; the experience is pleasant but not flashy. You’ll step off into a small town that feels a world away from the city. The main reason to go is the contrast: urban buzz to quiet streets, plus decent hiking on nearby North Head or Mount Victoria if you want exercise with panoramas.

Best time is summer (Dec–Mar) for warm weather and long evenings, though the ferry runs year-round. Shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are less crowded. Expect to pay around $15–25 return for the ferry alone. A half-day guided option that includes the crossing and some transport on the other side typically runs $40–80 depending on whether it bundles lunch or just drop-off and pickup. The full guided package with meal is convenient if you hate planning, but many people prefer the ferry-only ticket and doing their own thing.

Honest tips: pick the ferry-only ticket and walk up North Head for the best views and old military tunnels – it’s free and rarely busy. Skip the organised lunch tour unless you really don’t want to choose your own café; the village has plenty of decent spots and you’ll enjoy it more at your own pace.
