Waiheke is a hilly island 40 minutes by ferry from Auckland where vineyards, olive groves, and beaches mix together. Expect a relaxed but slightly touristy experience: most tours take you to three or four wineries for sit-down tastings with decent food matches. The island is beautiful but the roads are narrow and winding; you'll spend more time in a minibus than you might like. It's very doable as a day trip though - leave Auckland at 9-10am and be back by 6pm. Summers are busy and sunny; shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are calmer with better pricing and fewer crowds.
Expect to pay around NZ$150-280 per person depending on whether you catch the ferry yourself and join a small group tour or book an all-inclusive package with transfers and lunch. The higher end usually includes more generous pours and a proper meal. One solid tip: pick a tour that focuses on smaller producers rather than the big names everyone knows - the wines are more interesting. Skip trying to rent a car and self-drive unless you're very confident on tight island roads and happy to spit instead of swallow all day.
