The kelp forest tank at Kelly Tarlton's is the highlight of the aquarium – a tall, circular tank filled with swaying kelp, fish, and the occasional stingray or shark gliding past. Expect a calm, dimly lit experience rather than a thrill ride. You'll walk through an acrylic tunnel where you can stand and watch the forest move above and around you. The full visit takes 1.5–2 hours including the penguins, sharks, and touch pools. It's genuinely peaceful and educational if you take your time reading the signs and watching the fish behaviour.
Best time is weekdays in winter (June–August) when crowds are lightest and the aquarium feels more relaxing. Summer weekends get packed with families. Expect to pay around NZ$45–65 for a standard adult ticket; add another $30–50 if you want the shark snorkel or cage dive. Kids are cheaper, and combo tickets with other attractions don't usually save much here.
Pick the standard entry and spend extra time at the kelp forest and the stingray bay – they're the most rewarding bits. Skip the shark cage dive unless you're a diver; it's short, cold, and the visibility isn't great for the price. Bring socks if you do the snorkel – the floors are freezing.
