Should You Do a Dive Trip from Panama City?

Most dive trips from Panama City head to the Pacific side, either day trips to nearby sites like Taboga or multi-day liveaboards to Coiba National Park. Expect warm water (78–84°F), decent visibility (30–80 ft depending on season), and a good chance of seeing schooling fish, reef sharks, rays, and occasional whale sharks or turtles. The diving is drift-style over rocky reefs and seamounts rather than pristine coral gardens. It’s solid but not Caribbean-level; the real draw is the big pelagic action and the remote feel of Coiba. Day trips are relaxed and doable for most certified divers; liveaboards are more serious and rewarding if you have the time.

Best time is the dry season from December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is better. June to November brings cheaper prices and fewer crowds but rougher boat rides and rain. Expect to pay around $150–220 for a two-tank day trip including gear and transport. Liveaboard trips to Coiba run roughly $250–450 per day depending on boat and duration. Pick a reputable operator that actually visits Coiba if that’s your goal; skip the cheapest harbor “discovery” dives that stay in murky bay water and deliver mediocre experiences.
