Cartagena diving is mostly reef and wreck dives in warm Caribbean water with decent visibility (usually 10-20m). Expect gentle currents, lots of colorful sponges, corals, and tropical fish rather than big pelicans or dramatic drop-offs. The typical day trip takes you to sites near Isla Grande or Playa Blanca. It's a solid choice if you're already in the city and want an easy, low-commitment underwater excursion, but it's not world-class like the better sites in the Pacific or further up the coast. Most trips include two dives, basic equipment, and a simple lunch.
The best time is December through April when seas are calmer and visibility is better. Rainy season (May-November) often brings rougher water, lower visibility, and occasional cancellations. Expect to pay around $90-160 per person for a standard two-dive day trip including transport from Bocagrande hotels. Private or more remote trips push toward the higher end.
Tip: Choose the full-day boat trip that includes lunch over the shorter harbor options; the better sites are farther out. Skip trying to combine diving with heavy partying the night before — the sun and boat rides punish hangovers quickly.
