A DMZ tour from Seoul is a long but worthwhile day trip if you want to understand the Korean War and the ongoing division. Expect a full 7–9 hour day with a mix of bus rides, stops at observation points, the Third Tunnel (a steep, narrow walk), the DMZ museum or theater for a short film, and usually the suspension bridge. The atmosphere is serious and heavily regulated; you’ll see South Korean soldiers, strict photo rules, and distant views into North Korea. It’s informative rather than thrilling—more sobering history lesson than tourist attraction. Many tours now include a meeting with a North Korean defector, which is often the most memorable part.
Best time is spring (April–May) or fall (September–October) when the weather is comfortable and visibility is good. Summers are hot and humid, winters freezing. Expect to pay around $50–90 per person depending on group size, inclusions, and whether you choose a private or shared tour. Larger group tours are cheaper but less flexible.
Tip: Choose the version that includes the defector talk and suspension bridge; skip anything that promises the Joint Security Area (JSA) unless it’s explicitly confirmed—many “JSA tours” no longer enter the actual zone due to restrictions. Book a morning departure so you’re not exhausted by the final stops.
