Seoul Temple Visit: Worth Doing?

A temple visit in Seoul usually means spending 1–3 hours at one of the city’s Buddhist sites. Expect quiet courtyards, incense, modest buildings with colourful painted eaves, and the occasional monk in grey robes. Most are still active, so you’ll see people praying or doing 108 bows. The experience is calm rather than spectacular; it’s less about wow-factor architecture and more about stepping out of Seoul’s noise for a bit. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and you can walk around freely. Some temples offer simple tea or a short temple-stay program if you want more than a quick look.

Best time is spring (late April–May) for cherry blossoms or autumn (October) for fiery foliage; both beat the humid summer and freezing winter. Expect to pay around $8–25 total per person including transport and a small temple admission fee; longer programs with a meal run $40–70. Pick Jinkwansa or a similar mountain temple on the outskirts if you want real atmosphere and fewer crowds. Skip the overly polished central ones if you only have time for one — they feel more like photo stops than living temples.
