Mountain Hiking in Seoul: What to Know

Expect a solid half-day to full-day workout with steep forested trails, stone steps, and rewarding ridge views over the city. Bukhansan is the most popular choice—it's rugged, can get crowded on weekends, and often includes a temple or two along the way. The hikes aren't beginner strolls; many routes involve steady climbs of 500–800m elevation. You'll share the trail with fast-moving Korean hikers in full technical gear. In good weather the city panorama from the peaks is striking, but air quality can be mediocre in spring or late fall.

The best time is autumn (mid-September to late October) for crisp air and colorful leaves, or spring for cherry blossoms at lower elevations. Summer is hot and humid with thunderstorms; winter is beautiful but icy and requires proper gear. Expect to pay around $90–180 per person for a small-group guided hike including transport and a basic meal. Private tours with an experienced guide run $250–400 for up to four people. Public buses and subways get you to trailheads for under $10 if you go independently.

Pick a mid-week morning departure to avoid weekend crowds. Skip the overpacked full-day bus tours that combine hiking with Nami Island or temples—you'll spend more time driving than walking. Bring your own water and snacks; the provided lunch is often just okay.
