Most trips leave early from the northwest coast (Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches) and head to the calmer west-coast waters where spinner and bottlenose dolphins regularly feed and rest. You spend roughly 30-45 minutes in the water; the dolphins are wild so encounters range from a few curious passes to swimming alongside a pod for several minutes. The boat ride itself can be bumpy, and you’ll usually stop for snorkeling afterward. Expect 8-15 people per boat on standard trips; smaller “premium” outings limit numbers and give you more time in the water.
Best time is October to April when seas are calmer and dolphin sightings are more consistent; June-August can be rough and sightings spottier. Expect to pay around $50-90 for a standard half-day tour; $110-160 for smaller boats with better guides and longer swim time. Book the smaller-group option if your budget allows — it’s noticeably less chaotic and the guides are usually stricter about not chasing the animals. Skip the “swim-with-dolphins-and-turtles-and-seals-in-one-day” packages; they’re rushed and the dolphin part becomes an afterthought.
