Is the Earnslaw Steamship Worth It?

The Earnslaw is a real 1912 coal-fired steamship that still chugs across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown. Expect a relaxed 90-minute to 4-hour cruise depending on the option you choose. You’ll sit on wooden benches or stand at the rail watching mountains slide by while the engine clanks and steam whistles. The boat is genuinely old; the vibration, smells of coal and oil, and occasional soot are all part of it. Some sailings include a short stop at a historic sheep station where you can stretch your legs and grab a quick bite. It’s not a thrill ride — it’s a slow, scenic trip that feels like stepping back a century.

Best time is November through April when the lake is calmest and daylight is longest. Summer (Dec–Feb) gets busy and hot on deck, so shoulder months can be smarter. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per adult depending on whether you do the basic cruise or add the farm visit and lunch. Kids are roughly half price.

Pick the shorter scenic cruise if you just want views and the boat experience. Skip the full lunch package unless you’re hungry — the food is average and you pay a premium. Bring a warm layer even in summer; it gets windy once you’re out on the water. Book ahead in peak season but don’t overthink it — if the weather’s good, the Earnslaw is a solid, old-school highlight of a Queenstown trip.
