Queenstown’s bungy jumps are the real deal – the original commercial operation that started it all in 1988. Expect a solid adrenaline rush: you’ll stand on a high platform with the Kawarau River or a deep canyon below, get a quick safety briefing, and then leap. The freefall lasts a few intense seconds before the cord yanks you back. It’s over quickly but the memory lasts. Most people feel shaky and euphoric afterwards. The jumps range from the classic 43m Kawarau Bridge (tame by local standards) to the much bigger 134m Nevis Highwire, which feels properly terrifying.
Best time is summer (December to February) for warm weather and long days, though spring and autumn are quieter with fewer crowds. Winter jumps are doable but you’ll be cold before and after. Expect to pay around NZ$200–450 depending on which jump you choose and whether you add photos or video. Transport from town is often included.
Honest tip: skip the smallest jump if you’re comfortable with heights – go straight for the Nevis or Ledge for a proper experience. Don’t bother with the “combo” packages unless you actually want to do multiple activities; they’re rarely worth the extra money. Just book the jump you actually want and enjoy the ride.
