Skydiving over Queenstown is spectacular. You jump from a small plane and get roughly 30-60 seconds of freefall (depending on altitude) before the parachute opens, then several minutes of peaceful floating with unbeatable views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables mountains, and the Southern Alps. The actual jump is over quickly but the memory lasts forever. Expect a full morning or afternoon at the drop zone: briefing, gearing up, the flight up, and the jump itself. The staff are generally calm and professional, which helps if you're nervous. It's as safe as these things get when done properly, but it's still a serious adrenaline rush that not everyone enjoys.
The best time is summer (December to March) when the weather is most reliable and visibility is highest. Avoid winter if possible as strong winds and low cloud often cancel flights. Expect to pay around NZ$400-700 depending on jump height (9,000 ft is cheaper and still excellent; 15,000 ft gives longer freefall but costs more). Add video packages if you want footage.
Tip: go for the higher jump if your budget allows; the extra freefall time and views are worth it. Skip the add-on helicopter transfer back to town; it's unnecessary and expensive. Book a few days ahead but stay flexible with your schedule so you can wait for a perfect weather window.
