The Queenstown luge is a straightforward gravity-powered track experience on Bob's Peak, reached via the skyline gondola. You sit in a small wheeled cart and steer down a winding concrete track with gentle banks and a few small drops. Expect two track options: a scenic beginner run that's relaxed and family-friendly, and a more advanced one with tighter turns and steeper sections. The ride itself lasts 5-8 minutes per descent. After each run you catch a chairlift back to the top. It's fun and surprisingly addictive for all ages, though it feels more like a theme-park activity than an adrenaline sport. Views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables are excellent on the way up.
Best time is summer (December to March) when the weather is most reliable and you can comfortably do multiple runs without getting cold. Shoulder seasons work too if you're already in town. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a gondola + 3–5 ride package; kids are cheaper. Combo tickets that bundle the gondola and multiple luge runs offer the best value.
Honest tip: skip the single-ride ticket and go straight for at least four or five runs – the first one is mostly about learning the track. Stick to the advanced track once you're comfortable; the scenic one gets boring after the first lap. Wear closed shoes and avoid if it's been raining heavily as the tracks can get slippery.
