The canyon swing drops you off a platform 109m above the Shotover River. You get about 60m of pure freefall before the swing catches you and sends you flying across the canyon at high speed. It's over in under a minute but the adrenaline rush lasts much longer. Expect serious butterflies on the platform, some screaming (yours or the person before you), and a surprisingly smooth pendulum ride once you're swinging. The views are genuinely spectacular but you won't be admiring them much on the way down. Staff handle all the safety gear; the whole process from check-in to landing takes about 45 minutes.
Best time is shoulder season (March–May or October–November) when crowds are thinner and weather is still decent. Summer (Dec–Feb) is busiest and you may wait longer; winter can be stunning but cold and occasionally cancelled for high winds. Expect to pay around $180–260 per person depending on time of day, whether you add photos/video, and any current deals. It's not cheap but it's a once-in-a-lifetime type activity.
Tip: book the swing only, skip the combo packages unless you genuinely want the other activities. Go early in the day when you're fresh and the light is better for photos. If you're scared of heights but still want the thrill, remember the staff do this hundreds of times a week – the system is very safe.
