Expect a full-on but manageable adventure. Most trips run grade 3-4 rapids with a few grade 5 sections on the Shotover that feel bigger than they are because the water is cold, fast, and squeezed between steep canyon walls. You'll get splashed constantly, possibly flipped, and spend about 45 minutes on the water after a safety briefing and a bumpy van ride in. The Kawarau is slightly tamer with better scenery and the famous waterfall jump option. Both are scenic but the Shotover feels more like a theme-park thrill while the Kawarau offers a bit more breathing room between rapids. No prior experience needed; just listen to the guides and don't fight the river.
Best time is November through April when the water is warmer and levels are more predictable. Summer (Dec-Feb) gets busy and hot on the bus rides, but the long days are perfect. Shoulder months can be cheaper and less crowded. Expect to pay around NZ$180-280 per person depending on whether you add jetboating, photos, or transport from town. The combo trips are popular but add cost without always adding value.
Pick the Shotover if you want maximum whitewater intensity in a short burst. Skip the jetboat add-on unless you really love speedboats; it's fun but feels like bolting two different activities together. Bring a change of clothes, strap your glasses on tight, and go with a guide who looks like they've done this a thousand times. It's a solid half-day thrill that most people genuinely enjoy.
