Paragliding in Queenstown: What You Need to Know

Expect a surprisingly smooth, almost silent ride once you're off the hill. After a short safety briefing and being clipped into a harness in front of an experienced pilot, you'll run off a grassy slope and within seconds be floating above Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables and Coronet Peak all around you. Flights usually last 10–20 minutes depending on conditions. Thermals can give you extra height and longer airtime; on calm days it can be a gentle glide down. It's genuinely peaceful rather than adrenaline-heavy – more like flying in a very slow open cockpit than a theme-park thrill.

The best time is late spring through autumn (November–April). Summer offers the most reliable weather and longest days, though Queenstown can still be windy or rainy at short notice. Expect to pay around NZ$250–$450 per person for a standard tandem flight, with higher-end options including photos, video, or longer “thermal” flights pushing toward the top of that range. Transport from town and basic gear is usually included.

Pick a morning flight if you can – the air is typically calmer. Skip the add-on photos if you're on a tight budget; the views will stay with you longer than the footage. Book a few days ahead but stay flexible – weather cancels flights regularly here.
