Should You Do a Raft Tour in Queenstown?

Expect a solid half-day adventure with 45–60 minutes actually on the water. The Shotover River version is faster, bouncier, and more intense with some technical drops and tight canyon sections — it feels properly adventurous. The Kawarau River trip is milder, better for first-timers or anyone who wants the experience without getting completely rattled. Both include the standard safety briefing, wetsuits, life jackets, and a bus ride back. The Kawarau combo often throws in a jet boat ride to the put-in, which is a fun bonus. Water is cold year-round, the guides are generally excellent, and you’ll get soaked and laugh a lot.

Best time is December through March when the water is warmer and the days are longest. Shoulder seasons (Oct–Nov and April) are quieter and slightly cheaper but can be chilly. Expect to pay around NZ$180–260 per person depending on whether you add the jet boat or photos. The cheaper Kawarau trip usually lands closer to the bottom of that range.

Honest tip: pick the Shotover if you want the real whitewater thrill; skip the Kawarau unless you’re nervous or traveling with kids/teens. Also skip the overpriced photo packages — your guide will take plenty of shots and most people end up sharing them anyway.
