The gondola ride takes you 450m up Bob's Peak in about 10 minutes, delivering wide views over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. At the top you get a big viewing platform, café, and the start of the luge tracks. The luge itself is a gravity-powered sled on a smooth concrete track with two main routes: a gentler scenic one and a faster, twistier track. Most people buy a combo that includes the gondola ride up plus several luge runs and the return gondola ride down. Expect the whole visit to take 2–3 hours including queues and a coffee stop. It's touristy but well run and genuinely fun for all ages, especially if you like simple outdoor thrills without needing to hike or mountain bike.
Best time is late spring through autumn (November–April) when the weather is most reliable and you can see the lake clearly; winter can be cold and windy but the snow on the mountains looks spectacular. Expect to pay around NZ$80–130 per adult for a decent package with 3–5 luge rides; kids are cheaper. Pick the 5-ride combo if you have teenagers or want to race each other; otherwise the 3-ride option is plenty. Skip the evening “dinner and gondola” packages unless you specifically want the restaurant – the food is average and you lose the best daylight views.
