Paragliding in Queenstown: What You Need to Know

Expect a surprisingly chill 15-20 minute flight once you're clipped in. The launch is the biggest adrenaline moment – a few running steps off a steep grassy slope at up to 700m above the valley floor. After that it's mostly peaceful floating with epic views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and Coronet Peak. Pilots do smooth turns and can catch thermals for longer flights on good days. Most people are grinning stupidly by the time they land in a paddock near town. It's not a roller-coaster; it's more like the world's biggest hammock ride with a view.

Best time is December through March when the weather is most settled and the thermals are reliable. You can fly shoulder seasons too, but expect more cancellations from wind or rain. Book at least a couple of days ahead and stay flexible – pilots only fly when it's safe. Expect to pay around NZ$280–$380 for a standard tandem flight including pickup from town. Add a bit more for photos or video.

Pick the highest launch (Coronet Peak area) if the weather allows – the extra height and views are worth it. Skip the cheapest operators and anything that bundles you with a busload of people; smaller groups mean the pilot has time to actually brief you properly and you won't feel rushed. Wear closed shoes and layers – it can be noticeably cooler up there even on a warm day.
