Expect a mix of impressive mountain scenery and actual rafting rather than pure adrenaline. The most popular trips head down the Shotover River through Skippers Canyon. The upper section is relatively gentle with nice views of steep rocky walls and old gold-mining remains – good for families or anyone who wants scenery over terror. The full whitewater version adds six decent rapids, some splashy but none truly extreme by international standards. You'll get wet, possibly swim a rapid if you flip, and finish with a short walk or jetboat ride out. The whole thing usually takes 3–5 hours including transport from Queenstown.
Best time is December to March when the water is warmer and the days are longest. Shoulder seasons (October–November and April) are cheaper and quieter but the water is colder. Expect to pay around NZ$160–$260 per person depending on whether you choose the scenic half-day or the faster whitewater trip. Add roughly $30–50 if they include a jetboat return.
Pick the upper Shotover scenic run if you care more about the landscape than ticking off big rapids – it's genuinely prettier. Skip the lake cruise + raft combo packages; they waste half the day on a boat ride most people find average. Bring a change of clothes, a waterproof camera or GoPro, and book at least a couple of days ahead in peak season.
