Jet Boating in Queenstown: What You Need to Know

Expect a loud, fast, shallow-draft speedboat that flies down the Shotover and Kawarau rivers and across parts of Lake Wakatipu. The boats are powerful, the drivers are skilled, and the signature move is the sudden 360-degree spin that throws everyone sideways and gets you soaked. Trips last 30–60 minutes; the longer ones give more scenery and more spins. It's genuinely thrilling for most people but can feel repetitive if you're not into constant acceleration and braking. The water is cold, the spray is constant, and you'll be grinning (or gripping the rail) the whole time. No serious whitewater — it's all controlled adrenaline on relatively safe rivers.

Best time is November through April when the water is higher and the weather is warmer, though the boats run year-round. Summer means busier rivers and longer lines; shoulder months (Oct, May) are often quieter with similar prices. Expect to pay around NZ$150–250 per adult depending on duration and whether you add transport from town. Kids are cheaper, families can get small discounts.

Tip: book the longer 60-minute trip if it's your first time — the extra distance and extra spins are worth it. Skip the combo packages that tack on a gondola or bungee unless you actually want those; they're rarely good value. Wear the provided spray jacket and bring a waterproof phone case or dry bag — everything else gets wet.
