Eisbach River Surfing in Munich: Worth It?

The Eisbach wave is a man-made standing wave in the middle of Munich's English Garden where the river creates a fast, powerful surf spot right in the city. Expect cold water (even in summer), a lively scene with local surfers, and a short but intense ride. A typical guided experience lasts 2–4 hours including instruction, wetsuit fitting, and actual time in the water. Most first-timers get a few attempts to stand up; it's more about the novelty and fun than long rides. The wave itself is consistent year-round but the crowds and atmosphere vary a lot.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when air temperatures are warmer. Water is always cold so you'll wear a thick wetsuit regardless. Expect to pay around $150–220 per person for a small-group lesson including gear. Solo spectators can watch for free from the bridge or riverbank.

Tip: Book the shorter 2-hour intro session if you're new to surfing – it's plenty for your first try and less exhausting. Skip the big history-and-surfing combo tours; they spend too much time walking around instead of actually surfing. Go early in the morning if you can; the wave gets busier and the vibe more competitive as the day goes on.
