Expect a long but doable day: about 2.5 hours each way from Munich by train or bus. The castle looks exactly like the fairy-tale postcard, but the site is heavily visited. You'll climb a steep hill (or take the shuttle bus), wait in line even with tickets, and get a 35-minute guided tour inside. The interior is impressive yet crowded; the real payoff is the view from Marienbrücke, especially in fall when the leaves turn or on clear winter days with snow. Summer is peak season with huge crowds and long waits; shoulder months (late spring or early fall) give you decent weather with fewer people.
Expect to pay around €90–€150 per person including transport, entry, and either a tour or self-guided option. Trains are cheapest if you buy a Bayern Ticket and go independently. Guided bus tours are easiest but you'll share the experience with 40 other people. One honest tip: skip the interior of Linderhof if your tour offers both castles in one day – it's nice but the extra stop makes the day exhausting and Neuschwanstein is the one you came for. Another: book your Neuschwanstein slot for early afternoon so you arrive before the worst crowds and still have time for the bridge viewpoint.
