Should You Climb the Munich Church Tower?

Climbing the tower at St. Peter's Church gives you a proper 360-degree view over Munich's old town, the Alps on clear days, and the sea of red rooftops. Expect 300-ish narrow stone steps in a tight spiral with no elevator. The climb takes 5-10 minutes depending on your fitness and how many people are blocking the way. At the top you'll share a small viewing platform with other visitors; it's not huge, so it can feel crowded on busy afternoons. The stairs are uneven in places and the final section gets quite steep, so if you have knee issues or claustrophobia this might not be for you.

Best time is early morning or late afternoon in shoulder season (May or September). Summer weekends get hot and packed; winter can be slippery or closed in bad weather. Expect to pay around €2-4 for an adult ticket. It's cheap enough that it's worth doing once if you're already at Marienplatz.

Pick the tower at St. Peter's over the one at the Frauenkirche if you want the classic postcard view; the Frauenkirche climb is higher but the windows are narrower and the stairs feel more claustrophobic. Skip it if it's raining or if you've just eaten a big Bavarian lunch. Wear decent shoes with grip and take it slow on the way down.
