The Eisbach river wave in Munich’s English Garden is a genuine urban surfing spot. You stand in cold, fast-moving river water and ride a stationary wave created by a man-made step in the riverbed. Expect a raw, slightly chaotic scene: experienced locals mixed with curious tourists, strong current, and very cold water most of the year. Sessions usually last 3–4 hours including gear rental and a quick lesson. It’s not a relaxing float down the river – it’s more like trying to stand up in a powerful, endless whitewater wave while people watch from the bridge above. Good for confident beginners and intermediates who already have some board balance.
Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the water is less freezing and the sun actually feels warm after you wipe out. In winter you can still surf but you’ll need a thick wetsuit and real determination. Expect to pay around €60–90 for a guided group session that includes board, wetsuit, and instruction. Private lessons push toward the higher end.
Tip: book a small-group morning slot if you want fewer spectators and more waves; the afternoon crowds can get competitive. Skip trying to surf without any instruction – the wave is trickier than it looks and the current is strong. If you’re short on time or not confident in water, just watch from the bridge; the spectacle itself is worth the walk.
