Oktoberfest is a massive, loud, chaotic beer festival that takes over Munich for about 16-18 days starting in mid-September. Expect huge tents packed with thousands of people drinking, singing, and eating, plus fairground rides, endless souvenir stands, and a very drunk international crowd mixed with locals in traditional dress. It's fun if you like that scene, but it can feel overwhelming, touristy, and exhausting after a few hours. The best time is the first two weekends when the atmosphere is freshest and locals still outnumber tourists; avoid the very last weekend if you dislike maximum chaos.
Expect to pay around €150-300 per person for a full day including a few liters of beer, basic food like sausage and pretzels, fair rides, and transport. Beer is roughly €15-18 per liter mug, food €10-20 per item. If you want a reserved seat in a tent, you'll either need to book months ahead through a tour or show up very early (before 9am) on a weekday.
Smart move: do a short morning walking tour of Munich then head to the grounds by early afternoon. Skip the overpriced rides and cheesy souvenirs. Focus on one or two tents, drink slowly, eat plenty, and leave before you're wrecked. Weekdays are noticeably more pleasant than weekends.
