Elephant Mountain Hiking in Taipei: Worth It?

Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) is a short, steep paved trail that rewards you with one of the best views of Taipei 101 and the city skyline. The climb takes 20–40 minutes depending on your pace, with multiple lookout platforms along the way. Expect a steady stream of locals, tourists, and photographers, especially near sunset. The trail is well-maintained with stairs and handrails, but it gets humid and slippery after rain. It’s suitable for most fitness levels, though the steps are continuous and can feel punishing in summer heat.

The best time to go is late afternoon through sunset, from October to early April when the weather is cooler and the air is clearer. Avoid weekends if you dislike crowds. Expect to pay around $80–130 for a half-day guided tour that includes transport and possibly one other stop; going independently by MRT costs almost nothing beyond the $1–2 train fare. Solo hikers should bring water, wear proper shoes, and download an offline map.

Tip: Skip the full-day bus tours that rush you through the mountain in 45 minutes along with five other sights. Either do the hike on your own after taking the MRT to Xiangshan station, or book a small half-day option that gives you at least 90 minutes on the trails. The real value is lingering at the top during golden hour, not rushing to the next checkbox.
