The boat ride from Gateway of India takes about an hour each way and can be choppy. Once on the island you face a steep climb of roughly 120 steps (or pay for the toy train if you want to skip it). The caves themselves are impressive 8th-century rock-cut temples with huge Shiva carvings; a decent guide brings the stories to life in 60-90 minutes. The site gets crowded and monkeys are everywhere—keep food zipped away. Expect heat, humidity, and uneven stone floors. It's a solid half-day trip that feels far from Mumbai even though it's close.
Best time is November to early March when it's cooler and drier. Avoid June-September; the ferries often get cancelled and the paths turn into streams. Expect to pay around $30-70 per person depending on whether you go shared or private, with or without hotel pickup and lunch. The cheaper group tours are fine if you just want the basics.
Pick the early morning ferry to beat the worst crowds and heat. Skip the village tour add-on—it's mostly souvenir stalls and not worth the extra time. Wear good walking shoes, bring water, and don't bother with the overpriced on-island food.
