Expect sweaty, muddy trails through thick rainforest just outside the city. You'll see howler monkeys, colorful birds, and dense green everything, but it's not a groomed national-park walk. Trails range from easy 30-minute loops to steeper hikes of a couple hours. Footing can be slippery after rain; roots and rocks are everywhere. Without a guide you can move at your own pace, though guides help spot wildlife and explain what you're looking at. It's genuinely immersive once you get past the initial bug spray fog.
Best time is December to April in the dry season when trails are less muddy and bugs are slightly more tolerable. Avoid September-November if you hate constant rain and knee-deep mud. Expect to pay around $60-120 per person depending on whether you go solo with a driver, join a small group, or add transport from your hotel. Private guides push the upper end; public transport and self-guided drops it to the lower.
Pick a morning departure to beat the afternoon heat and rain. Skip the big souvenir shops at the end unless you need cheap fridge magnets. Bring your own snacks, plenty of water, and wear proper hiking shoes with good grip; flip-flops are a terrible idea here.
