Evensong at Westminster Abbey: Worth It?

Evensong at Westminster Abbey is one of the best free experiences in London. You sit in the historic choir stalls surrounded by centuries of architecture while the choir sings a short service of psalms, canticles and an anthem. The whole thing lasts about 45–60 minutes. Expect beautiful singing in a stunning space, but it is a real church service – not a concert – so phones stay off and you stay seated until the end. It’s intimate, atmospheric, and far less crowded than daytime visits.

The best time is during term when the full choir is singing, typically Tuesday to Friday at 5pm and Sunday at 3pm. Spring and autumn tend to have the strongest choral standards and fewer tourists. Expect to pay around £0–£25 depending on whether you just attend evensong (free if you enter via the north door at the right time) or combine it with a full visit earlier in the day. The full abbey ticket is significantly more expensive but not required for evensong.

Tip: arrive at the north door at least 30–40 minutes early for a decent seat in the choir; the first few rows fill quickly. Skip the audio guide entirely – it’s unnecessary for evensong and the daytime tour is better done on a different day if you want the history. Just sit, listen, and absorb one of England’s great choral traditions.
