Everglades Airboat Tour: Worth It?

An airboat tour in the Everglades is a loud, fast, shallow-water ride that gets you right into the sawgrass marshes. Expect wind in your face, the roar of the engine, and a decent chance of spotting alligators, birds, and maybe a turtle or two. The guides give basic ecology talks and will usually stop in a quieter spot for photos and explanations. It's touristy but genuinely fun if you like being outdoors and seeing wildlife up close. Tours last 30-60 minutes on the water plus some time at the dock area, which often has gator exhibits or a small shop.

Go December through April. That's dry season: fewer mosquitoes, lower water levels that concentrate the wildlife, and more comfortable temperatures. Summer is cheaper and less crowded but brutally hot, humid, and buggy. Expect to pay around $40-70 per adult for a standard tour; longer private or sunset trips run higher. Booking ahead online usually saves a few bucks compared to walk-ups.

Pick a morning tour to beat the heat and the biggest crowds. Skip the so-called "VIP" or "exclusive" experiences unless you really hate sharing the boat; the regular ones get you to the same places. Bring earplugs if you're noise-sensitive, wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet, and apply bug spray before you board.
