A day trip to the Everglades from Orlando means driving about an hour south for a 90-minute airboat ride through shallow wetlands and sawgrass. Expect loud engines, wind in your face, and decent odds of seeing alligators, herons, hawks, and other birds up close. The boats go fast then slow down near wildlife; you'll get within a few yards of gators on a good day. It's genuinely fun if you like nature and boats, but it's touristy, not a pristine wilderness experience. After the ride most people walk around a small wildlife area with more gators and birds before heading back to Orlando.
Go between December and March for cooler weather and more active wildlife. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy. Expect to pay around $60–$90 per adult including the boat ride and park entry; kids are less. Add gas and lunch and you're looking at $150–$250 for a couple. Pick an early morning tour to beat the heat and crowds. Skip the longer combo packages with airboat plus gator show or ziplines; the basic airboat ride is the part worth doing. Bring ear protection for kids and binoculars if you have them.
