Should You Take a Ferry Ride in San Francisco?

A ferry ride across San Francisco Bay is one of the simplest and most rewarding things you can do in the city. Expect cold wind, surprisingly big swells, and some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the downtown skyline you’ll get anywhere. The boats are working ferries, not tour boats, so the vibe is functional: seats inside and out, a snack bar, and passengers who actually commute. The ride itself is usually 20–60 minutes depending on your destination. It feels like real travel rather than a theme-park experience.

The best time is spring and fall. Summer can be brutally foggy and windy, especially in the afternoons. Morning trips tend to have clearer views. Expect to pay around $15–35 round-trip per adult depending on where you go (Alcatraz is more). Kids and seniors get discounts. It’s cheaper and less crowded than the big sightseeing cruises.

Pick the Sausalito or Angel Island route if you want a pleasant half-day with lunch or a walk; both feel like proper mini-adventures. Skip the short “Golden Gate Bridge cruise” loops unless you specifically want narrated commentary—they’re more crowded and less satisfying than just taking a regular ferry. Bring layers, even if it’s sunny in the city. The wind on the water is no joke.
