Ferry to Oslo's Islands: Worth It?

Oslo's fjord islands are an easy half-day escape from the city. The public ferry system is straightforward: you buy a ticket (or use your Oslo Pass), board with locals and commuters, and cruise past rocky shores and small wooden houses. Expect a simple, no-frills ride rather than a luxury boat tour. The larger islands have walking paths, swimming spots, and a few cafés, but they're mostly quiet and residential. In summer the boats fill with families and hikers; you'll share the deck with baby strollers and backpacks. The whole trip feels like using very scenic public transport.

Best time is June to mid-August when the water is warm enough for swimming and cafés stay open later. Shoulder months (May and late August) are calmer and cheaper but can be chilly. Expect to pay around 100-250 NOK for a round-trip ticket depending on how far you go and whether you buy a day pass. A full-day island-hopping ticket is usually the better value if you plan to visit more than one.

Pick Hovedøya or Langøyene if you want a mix of history, forest walks, and decent swimming. Skip the smallest rocks if you're not into basic nature with zero facilities. Bring your own picnic and a jacket; the wind on the water is stronger than it looks from the harbor.
