Should You Tour Cartagena's Forts and Castles?

Expect a solid half-day of climbing steep ramps, exploring thick stone walls, and learning about colonial defense systems. San Felipe de Barajas is the main draw: a massive, well-preserved fortress with tunnels, cannons, and great views over the city. Most tours also include stops at the Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa and a quick drive around the old city walls. It's interesting if you like military history or want decent photos, but it's hot, exposed, and involves a fair amount of walking in direct sun. The experience feels more like a structured educational visit than an adventure.

Best time is December to February when it's drier and slightly cooler. Avoid April–October if you hate humidity and afternoon downpours. Expect to pay around $90–$130 per person for a decent small-group tour with transport and a guide; private tours run higher. Tickets alone for San Felipe are cheap if you go independently.

Honest tips: Do San Felipe early in the morning before the cruise-ship groups arrive. Skip the Popa convent unless you really want the panoramic view; it's the least interesting part of most tours and adds unnecessary time in the heat. Bring water, wear a hat, and consider a guide only for the fortress itself; the rest you can manage on your own if you're short on time or budget.
